I am Mrs Toh

So, we held BB’s 1st birthday party at our home last Saturday.

We didn’t want to spend too much money, hence I decided to DIY a dessert table!

For food, we ordered from Neo Garden as per usual, which was a wise choice because they gave us 15% + additional 5% discount because we also ordered from them for BB’s 1st month. 😀 And we love their curry chicken!

Ok. So, I decided on a farm animals theme because really, our whole family’s zodiac are farm animals. BB is a sheep, I’m an ox and Mr Toh’s a pig. Literally. *Just kidding! Hahaha~

Googled for a farm theme birthday party and there were so many ideas! But what caught my eye was the ideas from Fisher Price. They had a collaboration with another site called Hostess with the Mostess and they had a post called Fun on the Farm.

I took the idea for a ‘carrot patch’ from there as well as the labels for the dessert table. Mr Toh really liked the idea of the carrot patch too.

Carrot Patch (source)

You’ll Need:

– Fresh Strawberries (I bought New Zealand ones from NTUC, $4.95 for a box)
– 1 Orange Melting Chocolate (Couldn’t find this, so I used white chocolate and orange dye)
– Piping Bag or Plastic Sandwich Bag (omitted this cause I didn’t do the carrot ‘lines’)
– 1 Bag Chocolate Sandwich Cookies (I used Oreo, about 6 or 7 packs)
– Parchment Paper and Cookie Sheet or Tray (I used waxed paper I bought from Daiso)

1. Wash and dry the strawberries, being careful to leave the stems on.

2. Cover a tray or baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

3. Melt the orange melting chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, according to package directions. (I used a bain-marie to melt the chocolate, then dyed it orange.)

4. Take a strawberry by the leaves and gently dip into the melted candy. I like to swirl the strawberry at the end to get rid of any excess. Lay the covered berry flat onto the parchment paper to dry.

I put mine in the fridge to keep immediately as I skipped the below steps for the ‘carrot lines’

5. After all of the strawberries are dipped and on the tray, place the tray in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes.

6. Remove the cooled strawberry tray from the refrigerator, and scoop the remaining melted orange candy into your piping bag. (You may need to re-heat the orange melting chocolate first before scooping into the bag.) If using a sandwich bag for piping, cut the very tip off of one corner after it has been filled.

7. Once strawberries are hardened, create “carrot lines” by drizzling the melted candy back and forth over each one. Move relatively fast so that your lines are straight. Don’t worry about making the lines look perfect or having the same number of lines on each strawberry – the differences will make your “carrot patch” look more natural! Pop the drizzled berries back into the refrigerator to harden. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.

8. For the carrot patch display, crush up the chocolate sandwich cookies (filling included) until finely ground in a food processor. Cover your tray with the chocolate sandwich cookie “dirt,” then place the strawberries on top! (I used more Oreos as I wanted to sort of half bury the ‘carrots’ in them instead of just placing on top.)

This was a challenge. Mainly because I originally bought white chocolate compound chips, but they were very thick when melted, I couldn’t dip my strawberries in them! The uncle at Phoon Huat recommended this when I asked about dipping strawberries, he says they will harden at room temp, which is true but it was too thick to dip.

So I googled some more and went back to buy white chocolate couverture chips instead. They melted in a more liquid form and was much easier to dip. But only thing is they don’t hold up well in room temp and will start to melt. But I didn’t mind.

Started doing them only on Sat morning as they won’t keep well or look as nice if done the night before. But it was pretty successful even though it doesn’t look as good as hers. I got good reviews from our guests~~

I found their idea for the haystacks too troublesome though so through googling, I found another idea. Rice Krispies treats! And got the recipe from cookiesandcups.com.

Perfect Rice Krispie Treat Recipe aka Haystacks

makes 16 squares
Author: Cookies & Cups
5 Tbsp butter
8 cups, plus 2 cups mini marshmallows
6 cups Krispie Cereal
½ tsp salt

– Line a 9×9 pan with foil and spray lightly with cooking spray, set aside.
– In a large post over low heat melt butter. Once butter in melted add in 8 cups mini marshmallows, stirring constantly.
– Once the marshmallows are just melted remove from heat and stir in your cereal and salt until just coated in marshmallow mixture. Now stir in the remaining 2 cups of mini marshmallows.
– Pour mixture into prepared pan and press in evenly.
– Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares. Best if served same day.

So. Easy. And so good!! Bought the butter and marshmallows from Phoon Huat and the rice krispies from Redmart. Couldn’t find any in NTUC or Cold Storage.

They were so good that Mr Toh asked if I can make them more often. Cannot lah!! Lol. So sweet. Once in a while is still ok. His friends and colleagues took some home too cause I made quite a lot. 😀

Last DIY item for the dessert table was popcorn! I originally wanted to buy ready made ones but Mr Toh asked why don’t want do it myself as it’s very simple. Hmmm, I’ve never made popcorn before so I didn’t know. But I googled for a recipe and it does seem easy. So I bought the kernels from Cold Storage and tried making it the night before the party.

Recipe from bakedbree.com.

Perfect Stovetop Popcorn aka sheep fluff

¼ cup coconut oil (or canola) – I used canola oil
⅔ cup popcorn kernels
3 Tablespoons butter, melted
2 Tablespoons honey
1½ teaspoons sea salt – didn’t have any sea salt so I used regular salt.

– Add the coconut oil and 3 popcorn kernels to a large pot. (I use my Dutch oven.)
– Cover and cook over medium-high heat until all 3 kernels pop.
– Take the three kernels out of the pot.
– Add the rest of the popcorn kernels.
– Cover and take the pot off of the heat.
– Wait 30 seconds.
– Put the pot back on the heat. Cook, shaking the pot occasionally until the popping slows down.
– After about 2 minutes, and the popping has slowed down, take the lid off of the pot. This lets the steam out and keeps the popcorn crisp.
– While the popcorn is popping, melt the butter and add the honey.
– Pour over the popcorn and sprinkle with salt. Toss until completely coated. You could also do this in a large paper bag.

The sauce was so yummy! Though I added a bit too much salt so the popcorn was a tad salty. =( But really very easy and cheap too!

Cupcakes from One Third Pastries.

Sadly, they weren’t very nice to eat, though they were very nice to look at. They were the most expensive thing on this table. Lol.

Cupcake stand was a free gift from Waterway Point! I only remembered about it on Sat and managed to dig it out to use. Hahaha.

The dessert table, looks ok right?? Simple but full of love.
Table rented from Neo Garden and came with the skirting.
Berries, cherries and grapes from NTUC. 😀

BB lasted till almost 10pm after his last nap at 3pm. T_T Tried to make him nap again but he was having none of it. So he went to bed at 10pm and KO-ed within 5 minutes while drinking his milk. Oh dear.

It was a really tiring day for me too because BB woke at 5am plus which means I woke at the same time. Didn’t manage to nap because was too busy with the desserts and deco.

But it’s OK!! Most important thing was everything went smoothly and BB was really happy. So many people to play with him and carry him. ^^

Thank you all so very much for coming and for the gifts and well wishes!

Oh yes, and Mom wasn’t around cause she was in Vietnam with my aunt. And she bought a Pikachu soft toy for BB. 🙂

Wow. Time has really been flying past and it’s another new year just like that.

On New Year’s Eve, I got to knock off at 4pm thanks to the boss! Even earlier than Xmas Eve’s 4:30pm. So happy and thankful!

Weather was damn awesome, very cooling and it was damn windy at home.

NYE selfie!

Went home for dinner and a nap before I headed out to find Mr Toh after he gets off work.

We headed to MBS to look for Beng and his gf. Wanted to find some place to eat but every damn place was freaking crowded. So we gave up on that idea and headed outside to find a spot to view the fireworks. It was gorgeous as always and also freaking crowded. After that, we decided to catch a movie and walked to Cineleisure as their timing was the latest.

Caught Seventh Son.

John Gregory, who is a seventh son of a seventh son and also the local spook, has protected he country from witches, boggarts, ghouls and all manner of things that go bump in the night. However John is not young anymore, and has been seeking an apprentice to carry on his trade. Most have failed to survive. The last hope is a young farmer’s son named Thomas Ward. Will he survive the training to become the spook that so many others couldn’t? Should he trust the girl with pointy shoes? How can Thomas stand a chance against Mother Malkin, the most dangerous witch in the county?

Well, we all thought the story didn’t really climax…as in we were expecting a big battle scene between Thomas and Mother Malkin but it didn’t happen. It was really anti climatic. Storyline was quite flat as well. Quite disappointed as we thought the trailer was promising. Mr Toh and I were also pleasantly surprised to see Kit Harrington even though it was a short cameo. Mr Toh said he died because he wasn’t a seventh son, he was a fourth son and he was referring to GOT. Lame…..but got me laughing. xD

We ended up reaching home only at 4am plus. Goodness….so freaking tired. Old liao, cannot tahan already. Hahaha.

Mr Toh was off on New Year’s Day! Happy me~~

We woke only at 3pm. =X Headed out for late late brunch at Whisk and Paddle near our house. But the food was kinda disappointing. And they had run out of the breakfast items but the waitress did not see fit to inform us when seating us. Tsk. Wasted 10 mins deciding on items we cannot eat.

The weather was awesome as usual and the place was quite lovely though.

Selfie! Kinda loving my brows, using benefit’s brow gel. Love the natural look~

Silly Mr Toh.

Flat white.

French toast with bacon and sunny side ups. Mr Toh disliked the thick bread and tasteless eggs.

Soft shell crab. Damn salty but I liked the wasabi aioli.

Mac & Cheese. Not bad. Had tomato in it that kept it from being too jelat.

Vongole Linguine. A tad salty but was the nicest dish of all. Clams were fresh too.

Otw to Dad’s place to borrow his drill set for our home DIY.

We stayed at Dad’s place for a while playing with baby Audrey then headed home for some DIY works.

Bought these items from Taobao and they got delivered before Christmas.

Key box. It looked nicer in real life, we were really pleased with this item.

Nice finishing on the inside.

Umbra flip hooks.

Love the design and color of it.

I love that my Mr Toh is such a handyman. Very useful to have around. =X

My brunch earlier today. Skipping gym as I’m still coughing and just tired. =X

Homemade pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon with maple syrup.

Oh yes, how could I have forgotten to blog this down. T_T Just want to pen this down.

14 Dec was our wedding anniversary. Not really a big deal to us actually, we’ve been married for 6 years already! We didn’t even celebrate, haha. Because we are so used to our ROM anniversary instead.

But still, it’s a memory for us.

2014 was good to me, uneventful but good. And I’m hoping 2015 will be even better to me, my Mr Toh and my loved ones.

No resolutions, I know I won’t keep them anyway. Hehe.

Here’s to a more awesome 2015!

I went tomb sweeping yesterday with Zhiwei and Mommy. Woke up at 6:40am so that I can meet Zhiwei at AMK at 7:30am. We headed to Woodlands to pick Mommy up and to buy the stuff needed. Halfway buying the stuff, I saw a familiar face! It was the auntie who sells duck rice at one of the coffeeshops at my workplace. Such a coincidence! Haha~ Chatted for a little bit before we continued buying our stuff. After buying everything, we were getting ready to head to Mandai when Mommy received a phone call. It was from my uncle who asked my mom to send them to Chua Chu Kang. They were gonna sweep the tomb for my maternal great-grandma.

The thing is…..it was raining. And they also had a lot of stuff for praying. They were supposed to follow another uncle who drives a lorry. But that uncle was fetching his daughter so he was gonna be late. Then my uncle told my mom to send them to CCK first, the stuffs can be collected later. But………it was raining! Even if we send them to CCK, they also cannot do anything. Also, their stuffs were not there. Send them there for what?? I was so pissed off…..because their planning sucks. Why can’t they just wait till the rain stop and go together in the uncle’s lorry?

We reached their void deck at 9am and all their stuffs were there. No way all of it can fit in the car. So we just stood there waiting. They also buay paiseh and just let us keep on waiting. I didn’t even know what we were waiting for?? It was still raining. Because I had something on in the afternoon, Mommy asked if I wanted to leave first. OMG. I got so pissed off, I just stared at her and said I wanted to go pray to Daddy, that was why I am here! We continued waiting for god-knows-what, after 15 minutes, Mommy asked me again if I wanted to leave first. I was really annoyed by then and said loudly that I WANTED to pray to Daddy, if not, what for I wake up so early?! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

In the end, we waited until my uncle with the lorry arrived and we all headed to CCK. It was already 10am plus………..fucking waste of my time. I was pissed off not so much because I had something on in the afternoon, nor was it because my brother had to return the car to his father-in-law at 12pm. It was because they took things for granted, we are NOT obligated to send you there OK?? Not even a word of thanks. Seriously, I have some of the worst kinds of relatives. Pfft.

After everything was done, Zhiwei dropped me off at Khatib and I headed to City Square Mall~! I was a qualifier for the Great Radio Game so I went down for the grand draw to see if I was lucky. I wanted the aircon set! But….nope, I didn’t win a thing. Haha. But it was OK. I got to see Divian from 987FM! He is so cute and so funny on air!

This is the only photo I have of him, because I was too paiseh to take more photos. =X

After the draw was over at around 3:30pm, I was starving! I only had a cup of soya milk the whole day. I bought melon tea from Gong Cha, recommended by my Mr Toh.

Not bad at all, very fragrant melon taste and not too sweet. *slurp*

Then I bought Tori Q on my way home from Hougang!

Oh delicious sticks of yummeh, get in ma tummy!!!

After eating, I was bored so I made some bookmarks! I followed the instructions that I found here.

I’ve been looking around for this kind of bookmarks but the ones that I found are pretty pricey. So I made some!

I love this quote and I put it on one of the bookmarks.

Time spent reading, like time spent loving, increases our lifetime.

OFTD yesterday~

OP printed top, denim skirt, pumps from taobao.com!

Headed to Mommy’s place today to help her do some praying at home. Bought something for brunch! Soya milk + youtiao + fried bananas + butterfly! Yummeh~

And after praying, had Mommy’s home cooked food for late lunch~ Fried kway tiao, ngoh hiang, fried tofu, stir fried veggies, roast pork and roast chicken. She also cooked bak kut teh. I love Mommy’s home cooked food. =)

Today is a bad day to not put on sunscreen. It was so hot and so sunny!! I was in a rush this morning to get out of the house with Mr Toh so I skipped that. Oops. Rushed to Kovan to help Mommy buy roast chicken for praying today. I was kinda late so the stall that I usually buy from didn’t have any roast chicken left. I tried my luck with the other stall, the lady mentioned she has a half roast chicken left but it’s already chopped. That was exactly what I wanted! So yay!! So lucky to get the last chicken!

It appears that every Sunday is Pamper Myself day! Did a hair treatment followed by a facial mask.  I have to try to mask at least once every week. I still have 1 1/2 box of masks left! Got to finish them before they expire. Heh.

Waiting for Mr Toh to get off work….I am hungry!

Mr Toh woke me up early today…I mean, really early! At 6 plus…and we decided to go have breakfast. So, he used his bicycle to take us there….and I really hated it! I just don’t like being fetched around by someone else on a bicycle, I guess. I’d prefer to ride the bicycle myself now that I know how to…hee!

Tomorrow’s our 1st year ROM anni! =) How time flies~ I hand made a card for him for this special occasion…hope he likes it. =D

The front cover~

The other side of the cover~

I finished writing what I wanted to write inside, and because it was a tri-fold card and there was a blank page, I thought the card looked empty…so I started searching our Picture folders to look for a nice photo and I stumbled upon one that we look in 2007!

A picture of our hands forming a heart. Haha…printed it out and I thought it was perfect!

*loves* Still thinking should I give him the card today or tomorrow…hmm~

A random picture of the hot chocolate I had at MacDonalds Kovan. I thought the flower on top was really pretty, so I snapped a pic of it. XD
