BB’s 1st Birthday Bash!

Posted on: December 6, 2016

So, we held BB’s 1st birthday party at our home last Saturday.

We didn’t want to spend too much money, hence I decided to DIY a dessert table!

For food, we ordered from Neo Garden as per usual, which was a wise choice because they gave us 15% + additional 5% discount because we also ordered from them for BB’s 1st month. 😀 And we love their curry chicken!

Ok. So, I decided on a farm animals theme because really, our whole family’s zodiac are farm animals. BB is a sheep, I’m an ox and Mr Toh’s a pig. Literally. *Just kidding! Hahaha~

Googled for a farm theme birthday party and there were so many ideas! But what caught my eye was the ideas from Fisher Price. They had a collaboration with another site called Hostess with the Mostess and they had a post called Fun on the Farm.

I took the idea for a ‘carrot patch’ from there as well as the labels for the dessert table. Mr Toh really liked the idea of the carrot patch too.

Carrot Patch (source)

You’ll Need:

– Fresh Strawberries (I bought New Zealand ones from NTUC, $4.95 for a box)
– 1 Orange Melting Chocolate (Couldn’t find this, so I used white chocolate and orange dye)
– Piping Bag or Plastic Sandwich Bag (omitted this cause I didn’t do the carrot ‘lines’)
– 1 Bag Chocolate Sandwich Cookies (I used Oreo, about 6 or 7 packs)
– Parchment Paper and Cookie Sheet or Tray (I used waxed paper I bought from Daiso)

1. Wash and dry the strawberries, being careful to leave the stems on.

2. Cover a tray or baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

3. Melt the orange melting chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, according to package directions. (I used a bain-marie to melt the chocolate, then dyed it orange.)

4. Take a strawberry by the leaves and gently dip into the melted candy. I like to swirl the strawberry at the end to get rid of any excess. Lay the covered berry flat onto the parchment paper to dry.

I put mine in the fridge to keep immediately as I skipped the below steps for the ‘carrot lines’

5. After all of the strawberries are dipped and on the tray, place the tray in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes.

6. Remove the cooled strawberry tray from the refrigerator, and scoop the remaining melted orange candy into your piping bag. (You may need to re-heat the orange melting chocolate first before scooping into the bag.) If using a sandwich bag for piping, cut the very tip off of one corner after it has been filled.

7. Once strawberries are hardened, create “carrot lines” by drizzling the melted candy back and forth over each one. Move relatively fast so that your lines are straight. Don’t worry about making the lines look perfect or having the same number of lines on each strawberry – the differences will make your “carrot patch” look more natural! Pop the drizzled berries back into the refrigerator to harden. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.

8. For the carrot patch display, crush up the chocolate sandwich cookies (filling included) until finely ground in a food processor. Cover your tray with the chocolate sandwich cookie “dirt,” then place the strawberries on top! (I used more Oreos as I wanted to sort of half bury the ‘carrots’ in them instead of just placing on top.)

This was a challenge. Mainly because I originally bought white chocolate compound chips, but they were very thick when melted, I couldn’t dip my strawberries in them! The uncle at Phoon Huat recommended this when I asked about dipping strawberries, he says they will harden at room temp, which is true but it was too thick to dip.

So I googled some more and went back to buy white chocolate couverture chips instead. They melted in a more liquid form and was much easier to dip. But only thing is they don’t hold up well in room temp and will start to melt. But I didn’t mind.

Started doing them only on Sat morning as they won’t keep well or look as nice if done the night before. But it was pretty successful even though it doesn’t look as good as hers. I got good reviews from our guests~~

I found their idea for the haystacks too troublesome though so through googling, I found another idea. Rice Krispies treats! And got the recipe from cookiesandcups.com.

Perfect Rice Krispie Treat Recipe aka Haystacks

makes 16 squares
Author: Cookies & Cups
5 Tbsp butter
8 cups, plus 2 cups mini marshmallows
6 cups Krispie Cereal
½ tsp salt

– Line a 9×9 pan with foil and spray lightly with cooking spray, set aside.
– In a large post over low heat melt butter. Once butter in melted add in 8 cups mini marshmallows, stirring constantly.
– Once the marshmallows are just melted remove from heat and stir in your cereal and salt until just coated in marshmallow mixture. Now stir in the remaining 2 cups of mini marshmallows.
– Pour mixture into prepared pan and press in evenly.
– Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares. Best if served same day.

So. Easy. And so good!! Bought the butter and marshmallows from Phoon Huat and the rice krispies from Redmart. Couldn’t find any in NTUC or Cold Storage.

They were so good that Mr Toh asked if I can make them more often. Cannot lah!! Lol. So sweet. Once in a while is still ok. His friends and colleagues took some home too cause I made quite a lot. 😀

Last DIY item for the dessert table was popcorn! I originally wanted to buy ready made ones but Mr Toh asked why don’t want do it myself as it’s very simple. Hmmm, I’ve never made popcorn before so I didn’t know. But I googled for a recipe and it does seem easy. So I bought the kernels from Cold Storage and tried making it the night before the party.

Recipe from bakedbree.com.

Perfect Stovetop Popcorn aka sheep fluff

¼ cup coconut oil (or canola) – I used canola oil
⅔ cup popcorn kernels
3 Tablespoons butter, melted
2 Tablespoons honey
1½ teaspoons sea salt – didn’t have any sea salt so I used regular salt.

– Add the coconut oil and 3 popcorn kernels to a large pot. (I use my Dutch oven.)
– Cover and cook over medium-high heat until all 3 kernels pop.
– Take the three kernels out of the pot.
– Add the rest of the popcorn kernels.
– Cover and take the pot off of the heat.
– Wait 30 seconds.
– Put the pot back on the heat. Cook, shaking the pot occasionally until the popping slows down.
– After about 2 minutes, and the popping has slowed down, take the lid off of the pot. This lets the steam out and keeps the popcorn crisp.
– While the popcorn is popping, melt the butter and add the honey.
– Pour over the popcorn and sprinkle with salt. Toss until completely coated. You could also do this in a large paper bag.

The sauce was so yummy! Though I added a bit too much salt so the popcorn was a tad salty. =( But really very easy and cheap too!

Sadly, they weren’t very nice to eat, though they were very nice to look at. They were the most expensive thing on this table. Lol.

Cupcake stand was a free gift from Waterway Point! I only remembered about it on Sat and managed to dig it out to use. Hahaha.

The dessert table, looks ok right?? Simple but full of love.
Table rented from Neo Garden and came with the skirting.
Berries, cherries and grapes from NTUC. 😀

BB lasted till almost 10pm after his last nap at 3pm. T_T Tried to make him nap again but he was having none of it. So he went to bed at 10pm and KO-ed within 5 minutes while drinking his milk. Oh dear.

It was a really tiring day for me too because BB woke at 5am plus which means I woke at the same time. Didn’t manage to nap because was too busy with the desserts and deco.

But it’s OK!! Most important thing was everything went smoothly and BB was really happy. So many people to play with him and carry him. ^^

Thank you all so very much for coming and for the gifts and well wishes!

Oh yes, and Mom wasn’t around cause she was in Vietnam with my aunt. And she bought a Pikachu soft toy for BB. 🙂
