Thai Spicy Minced Pork

Decided to cook this for Mr Toh the other day. We didn’t have basil so I searched for a recipe that didn’t need one and found 1!



1 brown onion, quartered (I used red onion)
2 garlic cloves
2 small fresh red chillies, stems removed and halved
1 small ripe tomato, quartered
1/2 tsp shrimp paste (optional)
2 tsp sesame oil
500g lean pork mince
1 tbs fish sauce
1 lemon or lime, juiced
1 tbs soft brown sugar or palm sugar
2 tbs finely chopped fresh coriander (I omitted this)
3 green shallots, finely chopped (I omitted this)
Steamed Jasmine rice, to serve

As I’m only cooking for Mr Toh, I used only 250g of minced pork and half of the other ingredients.

Step 1 : Place the onion, garlic, chillies, tomato and shrimp paste in a food processor or blender and process until just roughly chopped. (I didn’t have a food processor so I just used my knife to chop everything together on the chopping board)

Step 2: Heat sesame oil in a large frying pan over high heat, add the onion mixture and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Add the pork mince and cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring often, until mince meat is cooked and aromatic.

Step 4: Stir in fish sauce, lime or lemon juice and sugar and mix. Add coriander and shallots just before serving. Serve in lettuce leaves as an entree or with rice as a main course.

It looks OK but Mr Toh didn’t like it. He said it’s not that I cooked it badly, it’s just that the flavors didn’t appeal to him.

Err, personally, I didn’t like it either, thought it was a tad too sour.

Mr Toh remarked that this was a bit like tom yam, sour and spicy and he doesn’t like his meat cooked this way. So. This recipe goes in the bin. Hehe.

Maybe this weekend I will try stir fry minced pork with basil! Just got to buy the fresh basil leaves 1st. Hopefully I can find them in Cold Storage.
